Reflection

The Impact of Global Learning

My years in Global Learning transformed me and my perspective of the world. I was able to comprehend issues that are so distant from my reality and put myself into the shoes of others in ways that I could never have imagined. It also increased my Global Awareness, I became conscious of the different realities that happen around the world, including in Europe, in different religions, for different victims of international crimes, among so many others. These experiences also trained me to be a problem-solver of different global issues. It sparked in me the desire to create different Non-Profit organizations around the world that deal with different vulnerable groups, such as in India, young women in China, politically persecuted groups in Central America, and families in poverty in North Africa.

My experience in Global Learning helped me to understand that even though we as human beings will never be capable of solving all the humanity's problems in a lifetime, there is always something that we can do. There is always an area of interest that you can focus on that will be helpful and impactful to the world. Even though I am just one individual, I truly believe in the impact that every single person in this world can have on a global scale. Global Learning taught me to not underestimate the capacity each one of us has to impact the world.

All the experiences that I had during these years at FIU, such as volunteering in a non-profit organization, being part of the Model UN team, volunteering in a high school conference, joining the Model EU team, doing the internship for the Honors Abroad office, and participating in a study abroad to Italy, everything shaped my Global Perspective and Awareness. Through every class and every experience, my awareness increased little by little, and it still is, as I believe it will always be. But for me, Global Learning was the beginning of my learning journey. I will always be grateful for the skills that I got throughout this experience, including cultural understanding, cross-cultural communication, resilience, leadership, problem-solving, and intercultural competence, among many others.

Thank you to Florida International University, the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, the Honors College and Honors Abroad office, and especially to the Global Learning department, for changing me and my perspectives on the world. I leave this experience as a much more informed and prepared citizen and person.
